    Default Well boys I'm Hooked!

Got my Loar 310f today and started playing some chords and learned "Rose of Alabama" chording of course and "I'll Fly Away". Now I know some of you old hands at mandolin probably pick these tunes but for me just picking up a mandy and learning some chords and playing these I really enjoyed the mandolin. Even my wife thought it sounded great! I was really lucky, this mandy was bought from a pawn shop in W. Virginia and it was set up perfect! I didn't have to do a thing to it but tune it and start playing.......I love it! As I posted in a previous post I played guitar and decided to learn something new. I will put some new strings on it, but other than that I am just going to learn how to play it.
I wish I was twenty something again, and just discovered the mandy, hell, I might even be good by now (I'm 67} ha ha. anyway, y'all take care, I'm soaking my fingers in vinegar..............

    Vinegar? Mandy?

Welcome to the club and keep up that enthusiasm. I am lucky. I am also 67 but I have been playing Mandolin for 44 years.

James, Vinegar(apple cider) is an old trick many guitarists use to ease finger pain from playing too much. If you are going to be playing for a long time, soak your fingers for about a minute before playing and it will ease the pain while playing. Then when you get through playing, soak for another minute and it will help ease the pain.

Why not just drink the cider before it turns to vinegar? Far more effective pain relief in my view

From the OP. - " I wish I was twenty something again, and just discovered the mandy, ..". For what it's worth,i ''discovered the mandolin'' at age 18,it just took 42 years to get around to buying one. However, back in 1964 in the UK,you could find Unicorn c**p easier than a mandolin !. This was the first 'proper' mandolin i ever saw over here, the Gibson F5 brought over from the US,by Bill Clifton when he was living over here, for mandolin player (the late) Andy Townend of the ''Echo Mt.Band'' around 1966 (ish).

Beats the alternative I'd say! You could be 67 and not playing the mando, or worse yet, not be 67!

Rum. Soak your fingers in rum. It might not help, but it won't hurt.

From Almeriastrings - " That's my D-35.....". I got to play with Bill Clifton a great many times on his visits 'up North' & i know that he owned several Martin guitars over the years. I do remember meeting up with him to play at Manchester's MSG (Manchester Sports Guild) one Sat. evening along with Fiddle player Bob Diehl & guitarist Alan Hodson,& Bill had a guitar with a really spectacular back - it might very well have been that one ?,

Hey Ivan, that looks like a late 30's Gibson F-5 to me a late 37 to 39? Do you know what year by chance? She doesn't have a big headstock so pretty sure its not a 50's. Sounds fine to me, I really like the 30's Gibson's most are way underrated. My 36 F-5 fern is a killer tone machine.
