Thread: N K Forster Session King Adv tenor guitar

Default N K Forster Session King Adv tenor guitar

This beauty was one of the last tenors I made in Germany - a Western red cedar and mahogany Session King Advanced Tenor. It's a long scale (24.75") with an ebony fretboard, a high gloss finish and tortoise binding. The tuners (as ever) are Waverly's.

It's a very loud beast, and I like the cedar top very much. For this one, I decided to make it look a little more "old fashioned" so I lowered the soundhole to be more in line with the waist, and made the old stylee pickguard.

Great sound and a fine-looking instrument, Nigel.

What a great tenor guitar. I love the sound and the look.

Not to nitpick but isn't this technically a plectrum guitar at that scale length?

I do realise this is the type of thing that gets some folk reaching for the heart pills...so I had a look on wikipiedia. Whoever wrote the page put:

"The plectrum guitar is a close four stringed relative of the tenor guitar with a longer scale length of 26 to 27 inches (66 to 69 cm) and tunings usually based on the plectrum banjo - CGBD or DGBD. Plectrum guitars are also very suitable for guitar tuning–DGBE–because of their longer scale length but are much less suitable for CGDA tuning because of the high A string. Plectrum guitars were not made in as large numbers as tenor guitars and are now more rare."

    And about tenor guitars:

"Tenor guitars normally have a scale length similar to that of the tenor banjo of between 21 and 23 inches (53 and 58 cm)."

    In which case, it's neither.

From a marketing perspective, I have to keep in mind what people are looking for online. I don't think anyone will be searching for "longer than a tenor guitar but shorter than a plectrum guitar." The amount of people searching online for a "plectrum guitar" monthly is rather small." But plenty are searching for a "tenor guitar." So, I call it a tenor guitar.

This isn't my hobby. It's my living. Having folk find my work is part of the job. I get a LOT of people emailing me about my 4 string guitars, and have made them for all scales and tunings. Short scale? No problem. Long scale? No problem. Exotic tuning? No problem. 5 strings? No problem. Being a custom maker, I can make pretty much whatever a person desires. What name they give it, well, that's up to them. I don't mind.
