Default Newbe Here and Just wanting to say "Hi Y'all !"

I have been playing a guitar for years and finally decided on learning something new and decided on trying to learn to play the mandolin. I bought a Loar LM-310f. I am going to do the setup myself using the e-book I found here on the forum. My fingers stay sore from playing the guitar quite a bit so I figure the mando should get some of the action also. Now I'm not a spring chicken, but I figure trying to learn the mandolin will keep my brain working a little longer. I'm a born and bred native Texan and am proud to say I'm from Texas! Anyways, just wanted to say Hi and will be lookin forward to conversing with y'all.

    Sounds great!! Welcome!
This is an amazing resource for all things mandolin. The number of professional musicians, and also luthiers, will be a pleasure for you to get to know.
Spend some time perusing the Forum archives. They are PACKED with information from these folks. So many threads, so litle time.
Enjoy The Loar LM-310f. It looks like it should serve you well as a solid carved top instrument.
Keep us posted with any progress you make. We would love to hear from you!

Hi and welcome to the mandolin zoo, from the Pacific Northwest!

Another guitar player here, who got interested in mandolin later in life. Something to keep in mind, is that a mandolin isn't a little guitar. The right hand picking comes naturally, but for the left hand it's basically a fretted fiddle, and we can learn a lot from studying how fiddlers use their instruments. You'll find that "fiddle tunes" fit amazingly well on mandolin compared to guitar, so that's a good place to start when you're learning.

Hi from the UK Johnny - " Now I'm not a spring chicken, but I figure trying to learn the mandolin will keep my brain working a little longer." Exactly the same reason that i took up mandolin at age 60 - 13 years back. You'll find that the mandolin, with it's 'logical' tuning in 5ths,is a tad eaier to learn regarding getting around on the fingerboard than a guitar. Do as i did, take it easy & enjoy it - it's not a race !!,
