yes, Hi, I was wondering why or if, Ivoriod tuners or buttons can be aged. The new tuners look so white it seems like it would take decades for them to yellow.

I'm a fan of soaking them in strong coffee or tea for a week or so.

I used a little brush to coat some ivoroid buttons (while on the mandolin) with Z-Spar Varnish, probably 12 years ago, just hung the mandolin on the wall to dry for a day or so. The buttons still look great 12 yrs. later. I think I did two coats--one later. Of course, you have to clean the buttons first to remove any oils or other residue. I used alcohol. The varnish gave a nice aged look and they were a bit shiny too, which I liked. You can use extra fine steel wool, when the varnish is very dry, to take away the shine.
