    Default Odd oval-hole 4-point on Craig's List

I swear I've seen something like this before, although I don't recall where or when. Clues?

Its looks like something that would have been in the Eastman David Grisman collection. I like it.

If it is playable and sounds ok that is a good deal.
I have built a couple of bell shaped mandolins and posted them on the Cafe but that might not be what you are thinking of.

Looks like a cheapo to me, despite the nice looking wood. Neck heel shows a joint where two pieces were glued together -- usually a sign of a cheapie, IMHO......also the pickguard screwed directly into the top -- that's a no no... I do like the fiddle edge construction, but overall I'd guess a cheap import.....

Am I the only one who cares about posting the photos before they disappear, especially those on craigslist which go away very soon? Here you go... for historical purposes.

I don't recall this one at all though there have been similar ones in the past.

I confess I'm a little lazy about posting photos because I assume Jim will come along and do it.

Hah! I knew you would say that! Very funny. Of course, you are right. What is amazing is that this forum has become an excellent adjunct to the Mandolin Archive for historical information about all things mandolinic including oddballs. BTW I don't think I have seen this one anywhere before tho is does bear some vague resemblance to a Bacon Artist , tho the Bacon has a lot more grace to its shape IMHO. Here's mine:

I would be tempted at that price if it were close to me. Like Jeff Mando, I hate screwed on pickguards on mandolins and guitars.

That tailpiece looks like it came from VietNam through one of the Taiwanese eBay sellers. I don't think that the mandolin comes from them tho it is possible. The odd thing to me is the shiny finish on the fretboard. It is also hard to tell if from the photos whether the instrument is decently made and would play well.

I would prefer one of Charley E's bell-shaped mandolins over this one any day.

Jeff has a good point about the neck/heel joint. Very odd. I wonder if it's a bolt-on neck, and what we see on the heel is a cap covering the bolt head.

I think it was probably a project that was originally built by someone that knew something of what they were doing. The screwed on pickguard, Antonio Tsai tailpiece, and inexpensive tuners coupled with a large amount of Varathane or some other poly finish (including the fretboard) tells me it was probably "restored" by someone that didn't know much about it. Maybe somebody that was into heavy metal guitar, who knows. That dowel on the neck heel might have been their way of fixing where a strap button had been or repairing a problem with the neck. I might get into it for $100.00 as I like flushing good money down the drain.
