Thread: seeking name of trad klezmer tune

Default seeking name of trad klezmer tune

While listening to my favorite music program (American routes) on some trad klezmer, a piece aired that I grabbed the head in the hopes someone could identify it (so i can find it and learn the rest of it!). It was an older recording, with clarinet lead.

    Sorry for poor lighting! https://youtu.be/a_UkSvm6IMs

Check out the archives section of the American Routes radio program. There's a playlist for each show, it seems.

I do not recall the tune...yet.
Need to listen to the old stuff once I get this phrase into my memory.
This is a good challenge for me to transcribe and identify a mode / key. But the tune has a typical arpeggio motif and rhythmic pattern. So I'm guessing it is a Serba or Khusidl.
A nice melody. I like it too.

And the tsimbl. Are you playing it? Is it really sharp? Here is my version a half step down.

Yes that's one of my hammered dulcimers (you can hear I'm not using good cymb sticks, just typical HD sticks). I'm probably embellishing the melody a bit there - adding a bit of coloration that may not have been there. I just picked it off the radio and put it on the HD which happened to be handiest before I forgot it.

I may have transposed - I don't keep it tuned to a standard pitch as I just play solo these days and the pitch tends to migrate with the weather. It's easier for me to transpose than retune the entire instrument. (Lazy me)

It sounds like a bit of many Klezmer tunes - but I cannot place it specifically.

Ya I know...it was just a snippet they aired - one of those brief musical interludes between features - not much to go on.

How about, some recommendations on old klezmer recordings? Not supergroups please, just trad.
