Default Did a good deed today

A good friend has been helping a family that has recently relocated to Minnesota. There are two sons that like music, but have never played. Someone had donated an acoustic guitar for one of them. Decided I could do just as good - so at lunch today, gave my friend my The Loar LM-220 with gigbag, strings, Snark tuner and picks. Also gave some strings and another Snark for the guitar. (The kids don't know they are getting them. Will be a huge surprise on Christmas.)

Nothing in it for me except the good feeling. And that's all that counts.

If you were REALLY generous, you'd have given them the Gibson A.

Seriously, that's really cool of you. I'm trying to instill that same value in my kids.

Donating instruments is one of the best things you can do IMO. The gift can either provide a lifetime of joy through the wonders of music - or about 5-10 minutes of a good fire. Either way, memories.

Seriously - good on you. Hopefully they pay it back by jamming with you one day

Not to change the thrust of the post too much but, I’ve had a couple of different tuners and I don’t think I’ve tried the Snark version. What are most folks buying these days, for tuners?

Soupy - I've been using the Korg PC1 clip on. It's low profile (better for pictures on stage) and works well enough (plus it's cheap)

Well, for tuners, my mandolins have D'addario. Small, lightweight, and fairly accurate. As in, if I tune with one of those, then clip on a Peterson or Polytune, it matches up very close. Enough that the difference could be due to striking the strings harder or softer.

Most of the tuners out there today are goid. It often comes down to preference.

Eric, Quite a few years ago, 1981 to be exact, a bluegrass friend of mine had a 14 year old son that wanted to get into playing bluegrass so I gave him a Asian made mandolin that played good and sounded decent, he later became quite a great picker, played some with Dave Evans and recorded with quite a few bands as a side man, the last I heard he was now teaching at Pickers Supply in Va...He turned out to be quite a good musician on multiple instruments, his name is Merle Johnson and he was such a nice young man that I really felt good about giving him an instrument to get him started...His uncle had to out do me and he gave him a Gibson F-5L a few years later...On the jacket of one of his CD`s he gave me some credit for getting him started by giving him his first mandolin, no mention of the one his uncle gave him, that also made me feel good about giving it away....
