Not mandolin related, but we once had a large male black cat, very friendly, we named 'Buddy Guy'. And another female tabby that had a very loud, gurgling type of purr. I had an Ornette Coleman record one day, lots of weird honky, avant garde jazz noises on it. It was on the 'Arhoolie' record label, and my ex-wife saw that and dubbed the new cat Arhoolie.

This is my Tucker. He is a great Golden Retriever. I did not intentionally name him after the Tucker mandolin. He did open up to our family quickly however, and has good response, and is always happpy to play.

I've enjoyed the stories of the pets and their names that have been posted thus far, and especially liked seeing the pictures. We mandolin enthusiasts sure have some great looking pets with interesting names. Mandowillie, now when I see your avatar, I will think of Mr. Gibson. That is a great avatar. And I have always gotten a kick out of Junie as Tobin's avatar. I love the expression on that beautiful dog. Speaking of which, Tucker's expression is really investing as well. Can't help wondering what he was thinking.

Pets and mandolins lead us to a better life, that's for sure. I wouldn't be without either.

I got a kick out of mgap's picture of Tucker as well. The expression on that face is ...what? Condescending? Is it a smirk? I can imagine playing the mandolin, hitting a wrong note, and seeing him give me that look. He seems like a real character!

I agree, two of the best things in life are lovable pets and playing good music. I've had dogs pretty much all my life, but I went for the last couple of years without any in the house after we lost our last dog, a Boston Terrier, to old age. I sort of got used to the freedom of not having to deal with pets. It was liberating in its own way, but I didn't realize how much was missing until my wife decreed that we get this dog.

She is a handful for sure, and it's a lot of work between the feeding, the walking, the training, the playing, the baths, etc. It's like having a perpetual toddler that's always messing with stuff if you don't pay attention. Junie is only 7 months old, and already a 55-pound mass of bulldogge muscle. As she gets older, hopefully she will require less constant maintenance and we can find a little more balance. But as of right now, I'm spending much more time tending to the dog than I am playing music.

When she doesn't have her grumpy face on, though, she's pretty darn sweet.

Thanks for asking. I have quite a few cats, three in the house but others who live in the various barns elsewhere on the farm (each of which is spayed/neutered and recieves great Vet care). Only the five most recent barn kittens have mandolin-related names but now that I've discovered the fun of that, I'll continue, as long as my wife agrees.

The cat who is my avatar is Robyn. He's a really cool guy who loves to listen to the mandolin. He's not typically a case sleeper, but he did settle in my case one day and I photographed him there. Here's the photo. Here also is a picture of him listening to me play, something he does all the time.

We have a bunch of adopted cats and one adopted itty bitty dog who thinks he is a cat... However none of these roomies are named after instruments...

But the little dog, Buster, surprised me by signing my mandolin one evening while we were camping. I was picking out a song in our RV and he hopped down from the upper bunk onto my mandolin and left 4 little toenail marks in the lacquer on the top.

I was going to be upset, but then I remembered all the pets we've had in the past, and how much I wish each of them had left a mark in one of my instruments for me to remember them by.

Life trumps possessions every time.

Our Goldendoodle, who we lost earlier this year, was named Tremolo. When people asked my why, I said that the only way I'd ever have a tremolo that anyone would admire was if I had a good looking dog by that name.

Sorry, I don't (and won't) do cats but I used to have cockatiels and conures and named them after musical brand names. I had Gibson, Tacoma, Martin, Steinway, Fender, etc. They knew their names and would come to me when I called them.

I'm going to try to post a video of our 3 rescues: Molly (border collie mix), Samson (black cat) and Rambo (gray tabby). Samson was dragging Molly by her leash. By the time I got my phone out to take a video, Samson had let go and Rambo took over.

Our boxers Manny (big) and Luna (pup). They both have highly figured backs. I wish I could say that Manny was short for mandolin and Luna was named after the musical instrument line, but alas their names were just happy accidents. Awesome dogs though!
