I see ads now and then that say the bridge is made of "Tone wood" Just what does that mean?
It's made of wood from the elusive Tone tree (Diospyros ebenum tonum).
Not a clue actually but I do know that bridges made of tone wood generally play like butter.

I don't know, but it could be code for not ebony and not rosewood.
Just like "maple back and sides" in a catalog is code for laminated, machine pressed maple; rather than solid, hand-carved maple.
And just like "HPL" is a code word for formica.
And "ebonite" and "richlite" are codes for compressed fiber board with some wood in it.
And so on . . .
Kind of like rich Corinthian leather.
