Nah, the strings were normal fluorocarbons. I recall when I saw and played it that Clifford explained the mechanism - the saddle holder has a pin underneath which passes through the support, and the saddle holder sits on the bed of silicone to give it a limited range of movement. The end of the pin links to the soundbox by clever adjustable stuff which allowed him to tension it so as not to destroy the soundbox. Cunning or what?

Somehow, the presence of wood among the pipework makes these Strohs look more like plumbing than a pure brass instrument would. The challenge for aesthetics seems to be unanswered so far.

Seems there were segmented wooden horns on old Victrolas.

Perhaps built akin to rib backed bowl back mandolins and Lutes?
