For some reason this thread reminded me of something. Many years ago here someone posted a very well done video of himself playing his Mid Missouri mandolin outside in the snow. There were various scenes around his house or neighborhood. It was really great, and I wish I could see it again. Anyone remember this?

Snow in Oxford! What is the world coming to? When we get snow up here in the frozen wastes of the Peak District it tends to hang aground for weeks. The only worry I have is whether to try to get to tomorrow night's session. A few years ago, a friend ski'd there with a 60's D28 on his back, fell on the way home and destroyed it.

You probably won't have the problem in Oxford but, if the snow hangs around for a month or so, you'r fret ends will start to stick out, so try to keep the humidity up.

I have to repeat the weather advice I read earlier.

Down South please avoid travel. If you must drive to the local shops.
You need warm clothes a flask shovel and sleeping bag in the car.
Let someone know where you’re going.

For those of you up North
You’ll need your thick coat.

But seriously that is a very inviting picture. I do hope your son enjoys the sledging. Your wife manages to get in stranded.

Forgot to add that I live barely four miles from the only known place in the UK where a County cricket match was snowed off - in June!

Ray, I’m a bit further South than Oxford - that’s where my wife is still stuck, but back with friends. I’m in the high peaks of the Ridgeway so I doubt it will hang around but thanks for the warning.

Sonic, son came in wet and cold but I think that counts as enjoyment when you’re 13.

Even the West of Germany was hit by that same wave. Yesterday's Irish session went somewhat strange because only one musician turned up, played tunes for 90 minutes and got applause and free Guinness from the crowd. On the radio they said we’re supposed to bring a shovel, blankets/sleeping bag, extra clothing including hat scarf & gloves, heavy boots, 24hr supply of food, de-icer, rock salt, torch with spare batteries, petrol can, first aid kit and jump leads.

We got about 6 inches but managed to make it out to our local session anyway and had a great time. Second best would have been sitting by the fire and playing!

Actually, we had a discussion on Friday with one of our young things who spent most of her life in Arizona and hadn't actually seen snow in quantity. The advice we gave her included buying a snow brush (with attached ice scraper) -- which hadn't crossed her mind -- keep a shovel and blanket in the car and a small bag of cat litter in case she got caught on an icy patch -- or a 20-pound bag to weigh down the back of her car as well as working as grit to move on ice -- and no, you don't toss hot water on your windshield to melt the ice/snow (!).

Not so much up in the Manchester UK area. We had an inch of it on Saturday,but it melted pretty quickly. Unfortunately,it then froze overnight making everything underfoot treacherous !.

A Ray mentions,we've had snow in June before now. Many years back,Laurie Lewis played at the Edale UK Bluegrass Festival,alway held on the first full weekend in June,with her original band,''The Grant Street String Band''. They came on stage absolutely frozen. It was snowing hard outside & they'd only flown in from Calif.the day before. I remember Laurie saying that it was the coldest place they'd ever played. It was bitterly cold weather when Ralph Stranley & his band played at Edale back in 1991. I spoke with 'Curly' Ray Cline & mentioned how cold it had been overnight - he said ''Hell fire !! - i nearly turned blue''.

Currently -3.2 degrees outside (predicted -12 tonight), we have 3 - 4 inches of snow outside and we're only about 25 miles south of Ivan. As there's a big hill in the way, I think I'll give tonight's session a miss.
