    Default non bluegrass mando

Hi, there may already be a thread for this. If so, a link would greatly be appreciated. I'm looking for bands current or not that use mandolin and play folk, country, or rock. I realize there's some overlap but I'm not looking for bluegrass. Thanks very much.

First question I'd ask is do you consider Dawg style, Reischman, or Matt Flinner bluegrass? Generally more fiddle tune oriented and usually banjo free. Oh, I know, Butch Baldassari. Listen to Traveller. Or Peter Ostrushko.

    I really enjoy Mandolin Orange.

    Greensky is pretty much rock/country/jamgrass.

    Caleb Klauder is old country.

    Here you go.....https://www.mandolincafe.com/forum/s...-w-mando/page2

Hard to believe this stuff was put up so long ago (2006).

So I'm sure there are plenty of tracks recorded since then which could be added to update this list/discography.

Taarka. Currently my favorite band. Watch the documentary on their website, it’s excellent.

A number of traditional irish groups and players would meet those criteria. Marla Fibish, Roger Landes, and Mick Moloney are some that come to mind. And Mary Rafferty plays some very nice mando with Cherish the Ladies too.

Taarka for sure, my two current favorites are Upstate Rubdown and Jeremy Kittel's band (either in trio or quartet form) with Josh Pinkham on mandolin. I have to put up this video...

And I have to put this one on, too, if you're looking for some alternative stuff, with Ryan Chapelle of Upstate Rubdown driving some soul:

Anything by Hamilton de Holanda (10-string bandolim), esp. o Bailedo do almeidinha

Edgar Meyer: Uncommon Ritual w. Mike Marshall and Béla FLeck
Short Trip Home w. Joshua Bell, Sam Bush (mandolin and violin), Mike Marshall (guitar)

Mike Marshall has recorded several choro albums, also duets with Holanda. My favorite among his CD's is Tasting the Wine Country
with Philip Aaberg (piano), Darol Anger (violin), Paul McCandless (soprano sax and double reeds) and Todd Phillips (bass).
His "Big Trio" features ALex Hargreaves (violin) and Paul Kowert (bass).

Hm, I read only the heading, not sure my suggestions qualify. But then, labels mean so little to me. Anyway, for "folk" (whatever that means) the Swedish trio Nordic has recorded three albums, with Magnus Zetterlund on mandolin, Anders Löfberg on cello and Erik Rydvall on nyckelharpan. Probably available from some Swedish web dealer, e.g., ginza.se, or amazon.de or amazon.co.uk. And amazon.com seems to have Hommage in stock!

Agree with Mandolin Orange recommendation. Great music — mandolin, violin, vocals, and otherwise.

From Devon, England, Show of Hands. Phil Beer is a multitalented musician (actually from Cornwall), often swapping between mandolin and fiddle mid-song. He plays mandolin, for example on "Cousin Jack"
