Default Chris Thile Begins a New Era with APM Radio

Just a quick heads up to draw your attention to this weekend's show, if you haven't heard it. (listen HERE when audio stream is available monday?, though that link may change shortly) On very short notice, Chris and the show's production team made changes after American Public Media broke with Garrison Keillor. The show made no reference to Prairie Home Companion, a trademark owned by GK.

Thile began with a well crafted acknowledgement of the situation, and he and the regulars and musical guests pulled off a nearly perfect reinvention that - for the first time - really sounded like Thile's show. I consider it a grand slam home run, for CT, Sarah Jarosz, Julian Lage, Gabe Witcher and all the show's staff.

The beginning of what's likely to become the most ambitious, eclectic, and interesting broadcast music venue in the US. *** WITH A MANDOLIN AT THE HELM!!! :-) ***

I am a huge fan of the show for more than 20 years. The transition to CT was easy to my ears and just keeps getting better.
I cannot help but wonder as to CT's ability to carry on long term with the show in light of all that he is invoved with. He does have alot on his plate and I do admire his work ethic as much as I do his incredible skill.

    Just kidding.

They are calling it Town Hall. New Englanders can identify with it now.

Just heard the intro and the first song. CT&Co nailed it. Great job and exciting times for them and APM/NPR.

Town Hall is a good name. A little generic sounding at first but then you add "NPR's Town Hall" and its got a nice ring.

Sure don’t have the originality of PHC.

True, "Town Hall" doesn't have the same unique ring as PHC.

On the other hand, that name does suggest a less rural and Old-Timey setting, which may help with the younger and more urbanized audience the show needs to continue. I think it fits the new music and younger artists that Chris is bringing to the show.

The US News story has added a correction:

"This story has been corrected to reflect that a new name has not been chosen for the show."

I think they'll come up with something catchier than Town Hall, which is simply the name of the venue that they are playing in when in NYC.

Thanks for the clarification on that issue. Hopefully, they'll get something more unique.

I think that CT's idea from the start was to use a rotating cast of musicians to supplement the house band. All the members of the Punch Brothers show up from time to time, along with Julian, Sarah J, Aoife O'D, and others. They all happen to be favorite players of mine, and although none are close friends, they've all been swell folks to meet, chat with, and be around in my experience.

The impression I have had that it is subject to availability around touring and recording schedules.

According to the satellite radio in my car, the show's name is The Chris Thile Show. At least, it was today. Who knows what it will be tomorrow...

That's pretty much it. The house band will always rotate around who can commit to what. None of the artists that have been regulars like to stay in one place for very long!

Didn't read this story but when I listened yesterday I got the impression that the town hall part was because they did the show at The Town Hall in New York.

Okay, that makes more sense now. Thanks everyone for the correction on the name. I'm still rooting for something with "Chautauqua " in it.

I wonder if it will move locale?

I hope they dont call it The Chris Thile Show. Thats also too generic too.

Needs something more original like, " A Wary Prone Dartagnan "

Agreed. I highly doubt Chris would want the show to be called that either..

I started listening to this show back when it first started, and while I don't listen every week, I have been a fairly faithful listener. As several others have noted, the show has evolved over time. I miss GK, but very much enjoy what CT is doing. Glad to know that the evolution will continue...

I had the unexpected chance to see the show live last weekend. Here's one sweet moment. Just wonderful, the range of music that Thile is able to showcase thanks to this radio platform. If you haven't explored the uploads on the PHC YouTube Channel, do it now. Take the time to hook your TV or computer to some decent speakers, and have at it. It's a great resource, and free for the listening!

I'm guessing they'll have more frequent guest hosts while Chris goes on the road. Maybe pre record extra shows?
