That is a Vega mandobass owned by a friend of mine associated with the Milwaukee Mandolin Orchestra.

Playing without a strap is only for Italians (or inside dent people [that can rest the mandolin on an indenture in the body]). How does he do that? Anybody knows? Enlighten me!

I was sold on Carlo Aonzo ever since his colaboration with Beppe Gambetta on Serenata (1997) and of course the must listen to Traversata (2001). What a great musician!

Well, I am of Sicilian-American ancestry, and do not use straps on mandolins, even my bowlbacks...but you don't have to be Italian to learn to balance the instrument and still have full access to the fingerboard.

I also sit when I can!

While perhaps not to everyone's taste, and requiring various degrees of deliberate effort, it is not a total mystery.

No straps for this Irishman living in Cornwall, while not lardy, middle age means I’m not convex either. The instrument is designed to be held like this. The same works with the arch tops as they have a longer scale so the hands can remain in the same position with the body tucking further towards the elnow. It’s not even gripped it just rests there with no effort at all. Wonderful design, which like any tool work well when you hold it well.

I saw them perform these numbers and simply put, they were GREAT! Just can't figure out how they get pass customs dressed like that. I get the once or sometimes twice over most of the time by customs dressed in my most muted cloths.
