    Sorry Demetrius....Yarmouth, Maine.
What a show! The Trio was quite talented, and moved through a variety of musical genres effortlessly (no bluegrass, though, which was okay). Carlo's tone and technique was flawless. I sat in the front row and watched his fingers fly across the fretboard with crystal clear notes and clean runs. All three clearly were enjoying themselves, and the joy came through in the music. Impressive and fun would be the best way to sum up the show. Anyone else from the Cafe present?

Just realized I misspelled his name - it was Carlo Aonzo. Most of the music came from his new CD, titled A Mandolin Journey.

It was a 317 Main event, and I was wondering if you were in the audience, Mary...

Yeah. It is unfortunate I didn't catch the bass player as well. I was being discrete in taking the photo and trying not to bother the musicians or the audience...

Appearing in Pittsburgh next Saturday, 28th with the Pittsburgh Mandolin Orchestra. Looking forward to it.

No, I was at the Fiddle Festival in Concord all day. I don't get to Portland much. Carlo was here in Kittery the night before though. Dave Surette and Steve Roy opened for him.

Yes, Steve and I were very fortunate to be able to open for Carlo and his trio (Lorenzo on guitar, Luciano on the bass). They are also traveling with Luciano's son Sam, who is an excellent guitarist and singer. We had a really fun fiddle tune jam before the show, and were invited to sit in with them on a couple of numbers during their set. Carlo is an amazing musician, technically brilliant, but also a truly deep musician who brings real soul, passion, and beauty to his playing. And hearing him with the trio is fantastic. I really, really encourage Cafe mando-lovers to try to get to a show on this US tour. The one Mary mentioned is at the Stone Church in Newmarket NH this Wednesday night. $5, crazy! Plenty left over for CDs and beer. Hope to see you there, I will be.

I've always liked him. He made a lovely CD with Beppe Gambetta a few years ago.

A couple of observations on the clip above, Ross:
He seems to have changed his style a bit. It sounds more like something by Grisman now.
Secondly, as far as I could tell, he is using a pick-up, which isn't really what I expected either.

Sounds good to me though. They look cool as well!

$5.00 as the price for this show is crazy great! Our tickets were $15.00 each, and I thought underpriced for the value received.

    Hi Dagger.

At times there was a strong Grisman influence. The evening was billed as a "Mandolin Journey," taking in musical styles from around the globe that feature mandolins. It did get more varied.

Another interesting observation from the evening, Carlo played for about an hour and fifteen minutes before he touched his tuners.

He played with Beppe quite a few years ago. The two CDs they made were Serenata (1999) and Traversata (with Grisman in 2001). Then he pretty much concentrated on classical repertoire. He has been working with the trio for the last few years. I participated for quire a few years in his workshop when it was in New York City. That was primarily classical in a mandolin orchestra setting.

He has always been eclectic. For instance, he has always loved Jethro and plays many of his tunes.

I just found out that he is playing in New York at a small venue next week so I am looking at reconnecting. I haven't seen him in awhile and am looking fwd to hearing him play in the trio.

For some time he was playing a Giacomel modernized bowlback. It was a nice instrument but I think he has returned to his old reliable Pandini bowlback.
