Thread: The Gibson on head stock

Default The Gibson on head stock

I've always wondered how The Gibson on head stock of old F4s and others seemed to be so variable as to exactly where it was on the head stock. So many have it jammed between the tuners when there is ample space above and frankly the ones who have it above, to my eye look 'correct'. Was it that the headstock veneer was inlayed separately and brought to the main luthier workshop because I just can't see why anyone would squeeze it in where it often is. When you consider that Gibson was THE NAME at that time, I find it strange.

Yes inlays were done before putting veneer on headstock I believe, I may be wrong but there is so many strange ways/places The Gibson/ or just Gibson were inlayed, along with the other inlays. For fact on a bunch of F-5's that had Fern inlays the tuners were drilled right through part of the fern leaves! That was because of the worm over the gear tuners were used, if they would've used worm under gear the whole fern would be seen..
