I bought two bridge saddles made from deer antler material which I assume is close to bone
I am not sure about the effect on sound but deer antler is a lot softer than bone.

And there's the possibility it will not sound as good as it is now. If mandos sound good by matching the tops and backs, among other things, you may upset that balance. Or then again, it may sound better.

Personally I would trust Mr. Derrington over a whim. The bulge under the extension is meaningless. We don't know why its there conclusively. If it wasn't up to Charlie's standards, I'm not sure he would have signed it. Read what was written above... some Loars have that hump as well...

If you like the sound of it now, I'd either leave it like it is, or get a new fingerboard with a less extreme termination. Either one with a scooped Florida, or at least an angled extension up to 23 frets.

Couple more pics just to document some features of this mandolin.

The small seam separation at the end-pin area on the back was there when new.

Wonder what the "H" above the trussrod is for?

The bridge feet really dug into the top over time. More than any other mandolin I ever owned. I did
have a new bridge fitted that is full-contact. Haven't had much time to test it out yet. Also have a Red Henry bridge that is brand new. Will test drive them soon.

Sorry for the crummy pictures. They look way worse than on my monitor.

After contacting Gibson I sent my mandolin in for evaluation. They did a great total set-up so it plays better than it ever has and sounds
    better than ever also.
The people at Gibson improved my mandolin so much.
Can't thank Gibson enough for their good works.

Thanks to all the forum members who replied on this subject. I value your comments.

PS:I enjoy playing this mando a lot more since I got rid of the fretboard extension. No regrets there.

Was Gibson able to remove the hump? I couldn't tell from the pics.

No soundboard repair/modification was done. They said it would cost a lot. Advised me not to get rid of the hump. "You don't want to do that."

No mention of the little seam separation on the back. It was there on day one. Still there.

The set-up sure is nice though. Glad they did that for me. It had no maintenance for 13 years.
