Thread: Mandolin with the largest frets for under 2k?

  1. #1

Default Mandolin with the largest frets for under 2k?

I am looking to upgrade to a better mandolin soon with a budget of about 2k. I am not set on getting an A or F, and no preference on new or used. One of the biggest things I am looking for is something with as large frets as possible. Jumbo frets, Banjo frets, anything Larger than standard and preferably with a radius fingerboard. I am thinking about a kentucky 1050 or 950 but wondering what other options I might have in my price range.

I'd suggest finding a mandolin with the sound and feel you really like and have it refretted in the fretwire you want. Used Collings MTs are often under $2k and you might have money left for the refret. Used you might find something in need a refret anyway, saving a few bucks. If you are buying used, there are a lot of good instruments at or near that $2k mark, have fun!

Stock rigel frets are larger than most, imho. An A is well within your budget. Radiused too.

If you do get a refret, get evo or stainless, they last so much longer than standards.

Thank you for all the responses. I have considered buying one I liked and getting a refret. I am not against it, and might end up being the route it take, but I have done that quiet a few times with guitars lately that i'm kinda over it at this time. Though I would be going with stainless like suggested. I haven't played EVO wire yet, but everything I had redone and played with stainless steel has been quiet noticeable difference. Granted that is on a guitar verses mandolin.

Find a used American-made Breedlove. You might be able to find a Cascade or something in that price range.

I think JBovier is great and has what you're looking for. I think they are better than the Kentucky 1050 or 950.
    A5 is $900

    F5 is $1600

    Both have .080 frets

A used Collings MT (A5 style) is better yet and can be had around $1650-$1800

Agree with the Breedlove and Rigel suggestions. My Cascade was well below $2k. And it was essentially unplayed.

Fwiw, i know you have stainless on guitar.
I dont know your thought on stainless steel. Here are mine:

I have ss on my brentrup.
I love the clarity, greater treble and long wear.
I do think they have a slightly harder feel to the fingers. Not bad, but i do notice this, slightly.

I would compare the finger tip feel as similar to using a heavier gauge set than you actually are using, ie lights feel almost like mediums.

I could be confusing some other factor, but, i think ss has a harder feel. At least it seems so on my brentrup.

Where do you live? I'd suggest going to wherever has the best selection of instruments even if it means a longish trip. Playeverything they have without looking at the maker or price. Don't even look at the size of the frets, although that might be difficult. Then select the one that feels and sounds best to you. If it's too expensive for your budget, move on to your second favorite until you find one in your price range. If you love one that's 'way below your price (and this CAN happen) buy it anyway.
Get it set up if it isn't already and play the heck out of it. When, or if, you decide you still want larger frets, get it refretted. At least, that's how I'd approach it.
Oh, bring your current mandolin and compare it to the ones in the store. You might be surprised how well it stacks up against the others, or not.
