Looking carefully, I suspect that it's really a 4-on-a-plate tuner plus a cobbled-up single for that top tuner. Its plate edge doesn't quite align with the lower four, plus there's an "orphan" backplate screw wedged into a corner rather than on center & aligned w/ the tuning posts and other screws. Not that THAT helps solve the mystery!

If you squint, it looks a little like a charango, which also uses re-entrant tuning...

or . . . maybe it was brought to earth by alien life from another planet? That thing just might be the equivalent of a Loar-signed F-5 on the unknown planet of Nosbig.
I recently finished a new homemade 4-song EP of original solo acoustic songs; (sorry, no mandolin content this time). If you are interested in a FREE copy, feel free to send me your address via Private Message, and I will be glad to send you one. Trust me, it will be worth the price!

I posted a link over at Greif's Music Store who occasionally gets oddities. One replied: "We have NO idea. Haha. It has five strings, but not set up like a standard 5-string banjo. It looks like it has classical strings, too."

Whatever it is--I'd like to try it out...
Would it save you a lot of time if I just gave up and went mad now?

Judging by the ten (or nine) strings, and the guitar shape, I think it is a combination of a banjo and a tiple, aka a "bipple".
When 'good enough' is more than adequate.
