Sad. Not been a good year for performers.

Very sad news! One of my fondest memories is when my wife and I went to see him in concert in Houston when we were still newlyweds.
Keep that skillet good and greasy all the time!
Very sad indeed

Another good one gone. RIP.
Here's some Tom Petty--with mandolin content, even. Heartbroken.

I am totally bummed out about this.
How to make a crappy, dark day even worse.
Well, I just read that the death report was premature and that he may still be alive but in critical condition. In any case not a good thing......
Thanks
Several mandolins of varying quality-any one of which deserves a better player than I am.......
Regardless, it's not good.

Sadly, it's now official. Tom Petty was declared dead at 8:40 PM PDT 10/2/17. I guess it was too much to hope for, that he would pull through. Thanks for all the music; it will live forever. Grateful to have met him once, however briefly. Rock in peace.
There was a bit of mandolin in his music, though I'm a bit too out of sorts to dig any up right now. I recall the second bass player in The Heartbreakers, Howie Epstein, also played mandolin, in a striking coincidence with Chris Hillman of The Byrds, a band that inspired Petty's sound, especially early on.
Naturally, I've played lots of his songs over the years. My most recent band played "Mary Jane's Last Dance," as had an earlier band. I was reminded of this when the lead singer posted a room recording of us doing it, as a memoriam. I'm playing lead on amplified acoustic mandolin, singing backup. Here it is for you all.
But that's just my opinion. I could be wrong. - Dennis Miller
