    I liked the sound from my short necked (17 fret) 5 string so much that I've done the same with my latest 8 string:

    Good idea. The tone is better when the pickup is reading maximum vibration.
    That would be as close as possible to the 12th fret. Shown by this. Not much vibration
    where the string is fixed by the nut or bridge.

    Mine has 15 frets, and I never
    play at the top frets [or use the bridge pickup]...

    These 24 fret instruments have pickups close to the bridge which kills the tone IMO:
