Here's a little piece I did as an intro to traditional Scandinavian music and recordings for the San Francisco Classical Voice.
It was very much an intro and brief survey (I had another 100 albums I would have loved to include) oriented for a classical-music audience, but some of you may find it of interest:
Hot Music From Cold Climates
It's all great music.
Because I was focusing mostly on trad instruments (fiddle, nyckelharpa, hardanger fiddle, accordion, etc.) and the relationship with the classical-music world, there is not a lot of direct mandolin content (although some of the groups mentioned include mandolin), but I'll probably do another round at some point and include more of the great mandolinists up that way.

I always enjoy your writing, Paul.
One of my favourite CDs is Norrland by Jonas Knutsson and Johan Norberg. A slightly unlikely combination of sax and acoustic guitar.
