Thread: Swedish folk chords/tabs?

    Default Swedish folk chords/tabs?

So I usually play guitar and ukulele but my mother has bought me my first mandolin (an A style Oscar Schmidt), she herself also plays mandolin (A style Tradition). The first thing I wished to learn are songs from my favorite band Garmarna, but I can't find any tabs or chords of Garmarna songs for the mandolin! Or for the ukulele for that matter! Does anyone know where I can find them? I am able to read Icelandic and Swedish sites as well as English but I have searched and searched with no luck!

Garmarna is pretty well known inside the Scandinavian scene, but you are going to have a tough time finding their stuff in tab. I have a bunch of their early albums and really like them, but nothing at hand to look at right now to look at tracks. I'm guessing you can probably find a bunch of the more traditional tunes they play in standard notation on sites like:

    http://www.nyckelharpa.org/
    http://www.hfaa.org/

There are quite a few books available with traditional tunes from Sweden, Finland, etc. Some of those are listed in the resources I linked to above.

You might find a recent article of mine of some interest, too: Hot Music From Cold Climates.

The most comprehensive site of Scandinavian dance music is Spillefolk:

    http://spillefolk.dk/nodesamling/findnode.php?lan=eng

Thousands of tunes from all Nordic countries, all in standard notation, chords and MIDI, with many of them also with harmony parts and/or MP3 and/or videos. It's my go-to place for Scandinavian tunes.

Thank you guys for these links it gives me somewhere to start. Also interested in the part of the one article about the nyckelharpa. I like this instrument but pretty impossible to find in Canada. Maybe if I contact the band directly and ask for some tabs they might respond? Worth a try

Hard to say -- they're both seriously large sites. Spillefolk has a multilingual interface, which makes it easier to navigate for non-Swedish/Danish speakers, and I think it may also have more tunes with harmony and/or chords. Folkwiki has some of those, but has mainly unadorned tunes converted from ABC files.

Fortunately there is no need to choose, both are good hunting grounds to learn new tunes.
