Thread: Mystery Tenor- Can you identify the year and approx value

Default Mystery Tenor- Can you identify the year and approx value

A fellow posted this in another forum and said he was told it was from the 1880's. He also thought that it might be a baritone ukulele.
IMHO the baritone ukulele and the tenor guitar both came after the mid 1920's. I don't know of many guitars that had pickguards before 1929 either.
Any idea what year it really was, the maker (Stewart used a lot of different manufacturers through the years) and/or the approximate value? Its supposed to sound good but I have not heard it.

More photos. The bridge seems very distinctive.

It's an early Harmony-made tenor. Compare this one sold as a Supertone.

Wow. The similarities are there. Thanks. Any idea on value?

I'm not sure what he's asking for it, but I wouldn't pay more than a few hundred bucks for it. Harmony wasn't exactly known for its high quality.
Here's a similar one in near mint condition for $300

Here's a fancier one that is similar and the seller is asking about $800 too much at $1200

Notice that it has been viewed thousands of times and has been for sale for 2 years. It is not remotely worth that much.

Here's another asking $500 (and likely will not sell for that much)

This is more likely to sell, but still hasn't at $300

ooh! Looks a bit like mine!
    https://antebelluminstruments.blogsp...or-guitar.html

Not sure of the value, but Jake Wildwood also thought mine was a harmony made guitar. Kind of makes me wonder if mine might have been labeled as a Stewart as well originally. For some reason I can't click on the photos, is it just me?

I adore this guitar. Not as loud as my regal, but super sweet guitar. I will never part with this guitar as it sounds great and has character in spades.

Im no expert but I think a similar Regal in good shape would sell for $400 probably. The SS Stewart label might get you a bit more? Depends on if it needs a refret and neck reset of course.

I'd like to think that mine is worth more than $400, but it just had a complete overhaul. Luckily I got it for almost nothing.

I just found that post on Uke Underground. I checked my measurements for what the seller listed. Length, upper and lower bouts, and body thickness all matched up perfectly. Even the body taper he listed. (only discrepancy is that my scale length is 21 1/4). I'd say this is the same instrument. No idea if it's worth what he's asking, but it's a great guitar!

I searched for hours for a similar guitar to try to figure out who made mine. Funny for this one to pop up now. For some reason I really wanted it to be a Stewart. Cool.

For what it's worth, the neck has held like a champ for the few months I've had it back from Jake. It's strung up with steel strings 46 on the G down to 12 on the E. Stays in tune great. Again, not as loud as the Regal, but with more sustain. Very sweet.

Yes, I messaged the guy on UU and gave him the good news. It was made by Harmony around 1931. I also gave him the bad news that it is probably worth much less than he wanted.
He replied that he will probably keep it.
I bet it sounds as good as my 1927 Martin 5-17 .

Nice. How did you figure out that date?

You're probably well aware, but these guitars are based on an old SS Stewart.

I figure around 1931 by that style of pin bridge and pick guard
