    Default Voight F Mandolin #21

I am the proud owner of Voight F Mandolin #21 pictured below (quick photos taken by Dan just after completion, it is actually more beautiful in my hands!) What a marvelous instrument! I waited quite awhile for this beauty, and it was worth every moment. Here are some Specs:

    - Heavily flamed Sugar Maple back, sides, neck
    - Tight grain Adirondack top
    - Ebony fretboard with Scalloped Extension
    - Ebony peghead overlay with flush mount truss rod cover (connected with magnet - very cool!)
    - Upgraded Ivoroid Bindings
    - Voight Vine headstock inlay (exquisite imho)
    - Sprayed Sunburst (Dan hit coloring I asked for on the dot!)
    - Oil Varnish, French Polish Finish
    - 1 & 1/8" nut
    - Satin Silver Waverly Tuners w/ Ivoroid Buttons

Dan Voight is a superb luthier - simply no question or doubt about it. This mandolin is finely crafted, excellent detail work, voiced by someone who knows what his target is and how to get there. And he was a pleasure to work with.

After a brief discussion of what I was after in this build as to tone, voice, playability, I got out of the way and let Dan do his thing (something I have chosen to do with a number of custom guitar builds over the years.) I did poke my nose in a bit on aesthetics and Dan was very accommodating. My biggest concern was coloring, and after sending lots of detailed pics and chatting about shading, blend, etc. he absolutely nailed it!

Big voice on arrival, and as always with a quality instrument, just gets better, more open with additional play time. A wonderful, versatile instrument that has so much to offer, and is a real pleasure to play.

Just saw Dan at the Swannanoa Gathering. Besides making some really nice mandolins, he is a damn fine mandolin player also. I was really impressed with his instruments.

Beautiful mandolin, congratulations! Any chance of a sound clip?

I just met Dan at Swannanoa this past week and also got to play a couple of the instruments he brought, very fine work and really nice guy.

That looks like a real keeper. Way to go. Just don't let the dog slobber on it.

I will 2nd what everyone has been saying about Dan and his mandolins. I also got to meet him at Swannanoa. Real nice guy. Got to pick some tunes with him on the mandos that he had on display.Well executed classic F5s with big fat, loud tone. He definitely knows what he is doing. As others say he can also pick. He was holding his own with Flinner, Marshall, and Alex Hargreaves in a jam I saw, which is no easy task.

That vine headstock inlay is gorgeous. Well, the whole mandolin is too, but that vine really sets it off.

As Dan's first official customer, pleased to welcome you aboard team Voight. I'm still smitten with mine which is somehow going on 10 years old this year! Just dug up this old review:

I played a Voight for the first time at Carter's... it was on the "economy" mandolins wall. I was impressed with it, wish I could recall the serial number. I thought it sounded as good as the Nuggets in the "high end" room.

Beautiful mando! Can't visualize a finer vine inlay on the headstock, and the sunburst is just right, just imo. Enjoy!

    fscotte,
I also played that A-5 (I believe it's #11 or 13...) along with most everything under $5k and it was certainly my favorite of the day. If I had the cash that day I would have taken it home with me. Had I not found and fell in love with my White F-5, I believe I would have gone back for it.

    This one? https://cartervintage.com/products/2...nt=20352287939

If so, it's been there for over two years judging by this thread: https://www.mandolincafe.com/forum/s...CartersVintage

It might have something to do with the pricing at $3500 used, as I've heard that Dan's A5's now start at $4K new.

That is the one I played and yeah, I had already decided that I would be making an offer and banking on them being ready to negotiate based on how long it has been there.
