It doesn't increase speed, but it does improve comfort. I have a callous on my left thumb, it gets irritated by friction from tacky finish. Tung oiled smooth slides with less friction. Even just gripping without position shifts is better for my hand. All fiddles are thus, not for speed, for comfort.

Over the years I've owned new and used and believe this photo is the residue I'm left with. Play-wear, honestly earned, seems to have a metaphysical heredity. Scratches and worn spots tell their own stories and store their own sounds!

I see words like "phony" and "posers" mentioned.......as if authenticity is some kind of virtue.....well, in many fields it probably is, but in rock'n'roll.......well, what is so real about 60 year olds with dyed black hair or wigs or hair extentions or goatees hanging a foot down from your chin? It is really about fashion or perception, IMHO. You know, young guys want to look older and be taken seriously, while older guys want to look younger -- no harm in that. Get the instrument that fits the part!

Not sure where the "speed neck" term came from, but I don't think it makes you play any faster. However, I just had the finish on the neck removed from my mandolin and the difference in feel and comfort is night and day. My hand never moved up and down the neck very easily because of the nitro finish. I would also hear squeaking from my hand on the finish. Now, without the finish, my hand slides up the neck so smoothly. I don't know why I didn't do it earlier.

I believe the correct term for "wanting to appear "more" than one actually is" is "Poseur". A poser is sitting in front of a camera. Very different terms. Sorry, my parents were teachers.
One might call me a poseur for bring it up but, it does raise my hackles when I see language used with no regard to what am and what amn't rat.
