    Default New Fiddle Coming

My friend Tom TJ Jessen has been building a 10-string hardanger fiddle for me (viola size). Its a viola d'amore shape, with 5 top strings and 5 sympathetic strings. Perfection pegs and an internal pickup, too! He just got the top strings on - here's some pics. I wanted something reflecting my home here in the Pacific Northwest.

I wanted to post this in either the Fiddle Players, 10 strings or Thomas Jessen and Cricket Fiddle Instruments social groups, but I can only link to URL's there (can't post pics from my computer).

I've been watching that come together. That looks really neat. I love the sound of those.

Very cool! It's one of the sort of things to get someday, so I have to say I'm a little jealous!

I have seen Liz Knowles play one of these with the Martin Hayes Quartet. It is quite something.

Very cool. I have played a real Hardanger a few times. They are very different from modern violins. Also tuned differently with different strings. The sympathetic makes for part of the unique sound. I also believe that they are built a bit lighter than modern violins.

There are actually several different tunings for hardingfele (just like different dialects in Norway). I plan on using a modification of the nedstilt tuning (which is normal violin tuning) - c.g.d'.a'.e" for the top strings and b.d'.e'.g'.a' for the sympathetic strings, at least to start out.

Let us all know when it arrives and would love to hear some sounds from it.
