Default Saw this in an antique shop today

Was just surprised I ran across it. Was damaged, body separating near the strap mount. Price tag was $168.00. No interest in buying, but it was cool to see.

I had one of those once. They are not worth $168. I sold mine to a busker for $40, and it had no separation anywhere.

I would have to disagree with that. Maybe yours wasn't very good, but I had one for a while and it was a wonderful sounding mandolin. Maybe not a bluegrass connon, but a lovely tone and easy to play. I wouldn't pay $168 for a damaged one but in good condition I would. Wish I hadn't sold mine.

Reminds of something similar. Near here is a music store with a cool old Kay mandolin hanging on the wall. The non-truss rod neck is warped, and the bridge will need some work. The owner of the store wants $150.00 for it. He recently told me that LOTS of people look at it, but nobody is buying. Do you think he would get the hint that it's overpriced?

My first mandolin, $65.00 if memory serves me right. Sold it and bought a km-11 (about 1935 I think) for $125. I have a picture of that around here. I will have to hunt for that. I kind of wish I still had both of them!

These are on eBay weekly. Harmony used solid woods right up until just before the end. Look inside for a number like F-62 or S-68. That will be the date code. Harmony didn't really serialize but there could also be another stamp with numbers like XXXHXXXX where the X's will be numbers. 168.00 for a damaged one is high, heck it's pretty high for one in decent shape.

In my experience these Harmony Montereys didn't have a lot of projection -- perhaps a bit over-built? -- but they did have excellent tuners.
