    Default hidden text

    It happened again.

I reply to a posting with a quote, and the quote in my posting contains more sentences than what originally appeared in the post I am quoting. Its as if the person I am quoting had put his last sentence in invisible ink.

I know it sounds weird, but that is just what happened.

I have to figure this out. Something weird is going on. I feel like an idiot too because when I go back now to find the example and my quote and the original match. My first thought is that its a timing thing, where the original poster is in the middle of editing a post, adding a thought, and I am simultaneously quoting his original post, and somehow his update makes it to my quote before it makes it to the original post. Ridiculous. But it certainly happened.

To my knowledge unless something has changed drastically when you quote a message an update doesn't change what you quoted.

That makes perfect sense to me. So how can text appear in my quote that wasn't in the original posting?

I’d be really surprised if the cafe did anything other than pull the text from the original post, wraps it QUOTE tags, and throws it in text box. IOW, once you hit “reply”, what you’re quoting is fixed and no amount of editing of the original post will change your post even in the middle of editing. Your theory is possible, but unlikely given the complexity of writing such functionality. Not only is the software more complex, it would be an undesirable. I write a post that says “JeffD shreds a fretboard, man!” and you reply (while quoting my message) “I wholeheartedly agree!”. Now I go back and change it to “JeffD is a poopy head.”, changing what you quote along with it.

So how does one explain it? I dunno, got some examples of original post and your reply?

Next time it happens, just hit submit and leave the text you think is appearing out of thin air in place and then this will be worth discussing, because right now there's nothing to go on.
