    Egad!

Or maybe that should be Gdae!!!

I'm not a banjo fan, but I still have a perverse desire to hear what that sounds like.

To me it just sounds like a slightly deeper sounding banjo. Other than octave mandolin tuning, I don't hear anything mandolin like.

Another "score" for Gold Tone, a firm that seems to be willing to build any hybrid niche instrument that a few hundred people might like to buy.

I have one of their cello banjos, the four-string variety, plus a "banjola" -- mandola body, 5-string banjo neck -- and a Cripple Creek Mini piccolo banjo. They also offer tenor banjos in various neck lengths, ukulele banjos, mandolin banjos, octave mandolins, mandolas, and mandolins.

I applaud their business model: if it has strings, somebody might want to buy it! More power to 'em!

From Larry - "I don't hear anything mandolin like.". Instruments such as that were made to sound like a banjo, not a mandolin. It's simply a way of allowing a mandolin player to play a 'banjo' (sort of). In a similar way, back in the 1960/70's & even today, the 'Guitar banjos' were marketed to allow a guitar player to produce 'banjo-like' sounds.

I suppose if the instrument makers feel that there's a gap to be filled, they'll produce an instrument to fill it. I'm eagerly awaiting the 'Trumpet-Uke' - that'll be a show stopper for sure !,

PS - That reminds me of the Beverly Hillbillies episode where Jethro was given an Autoharp. Jed complained that he hadn't heard a note of music from it & Jethro told him that he'd been ''blowing it like crazy all day'' !!.

Guitar banjos have been around for a long time. Their most famous practitioner was Papa Charlie Jackson who recorded in the 20s and 30s.
