    Default Buying nuts online

Where can I buy a graphite nut?
And also a mother of pearl one. I'm in Europe, so they won't ship them from USA.

Sorry I can't answer your question, but in the past I have been very happy with TUSQ nuts from Graph Tech. They ship internationally.

I am not sure what you mean by a graphite nut. Graphite is used to lubricate nuts but is wat to soft to make one. I suspect you will have problem with mother of pearl as it is a CITES listed material.

TUSQ also makes graphite impregnated nuts, any music store should be able to get them for you.

I, too, seek a good source for a new nut, preferably slotted, for my Gilchrist Model 5. Not sure if this even exists as slotted/fitted. I may have to get my local luthier (hi, Skip!) to handle.

and hope I'm not derailing the OP's thread here.

For MOP nuts, Rothko and Frost have them: http://www.rothkoandfrost.com/white-...-nut-blank-si/ and are usually a pretty reliable seller (can be slow to dispatch sometimes unless you buy through their eBay store though... go figure).

Check the dimensions before you buy though.

As for graphite nuts, a quick Google will find loads for sale in Europe, for example: https://www.ebay.co.uk/i/28116347632...5978797&crdt=0

Don't ask me if they're any good, never tried them.

With regard to pre-slotted nuts - IMO forget it, they need to be fitted to the instrument.

TUSH is what a mammoth says to you just after you try to pull it's tusk out, and just before it slaps you upside your head...

Buying nuts online sent me thinking of a place in Chicago that was fabulous,
"Nuts on Clark" they shipped everywhere but, like I say, mi mind went tummy not tone.

But, on an instrument plane, pre fitted nuts are not usually fitted for anything that really exists. Get the blank or have the luthier who will fit it get what you want. My feeling on getting the parts is kind of like buying parts for your car and asking the shop to install and warrantee them. It's not quite the same thing but, that's how I see it unless previous arrangements have been made.

personally, i prefer unbleached bone for nuts, or kitchen counter top corian - both will typically be denser and harder than "graphite" or "tusq". this is particularly important for a mandolin, where much of its sound/tone is secured with open notes.

nuts really do need to be hand fit, too.

I make bone nuts with bones from the pet store. Smells kinda funky when cut on the bandsaw, but working great so far! Super cheap as well.
