    Long narrow neck - I guess it's a balaleika or domra.

    The young chap on our right is playing a balalaika (probably), but the one in the centre of the pic - definitely looks like a mandolin to me. Here's another:

    We are in the centennial anniversary of WWI and hardly a week goes by that doesn't memorialize some gruesome event. Wonderful to think for a moment about the mandolin as a kind of shelter from the storm.

    I think it would be great if someone with the skills put together a picture book: Mandolins at War. I don't know if there is enough material.
    A talent for trivializin' the momentous and complicatin' the obvious.

    It would be kind of sad - a tiny island of sanity in an ocean of madness. Every player would make me wonder "was he shot the next day?"

    Bill Bolick of the Blue Sky Boys once told me that he carried one around for most of his service time in WWII . . . including walking waist high in swamps, etc.
