    Default Anybody else riding RAGBRAI?

    I'm guessing there must be other folks whose love of mandolins and love of cycling overlap.
    I'm planning on riding RAGBRAI this year and am considering bringing an instrument with me (I usually bring my Big Muddy or an Outdoor Ukulele to keep myself company when I bike camp), anyone else going to be going and feel like meeting up for a bit of jam?
    If I call my guitar my "axe," does that mean my mandolin is my hatchet?

    I won't be riding the RAGBRAI but I will be riding the Tour Du Wyoming. Because of the nature of transportation of gear, I don't bring any instruments.
    May those who love us, love us. And those who don't love us, May God turn their hearts;
    And if He doesn't turn their hearts, May He turn their ankles, So we will know them by their limping.

    It would be cool if there were a Mandolin Café team.

    Used to be for a few years between too many years of distance running and becoming a backpacker, but never very serious on the bike. I do hang around with a bunch of gearheads though and I'm a long-time Le Tour watcher so I'm usually reasonably up on the lingo. I did know what RAGBRAI was without looking. I'll hold out for sponsoring the Cafe's backpacking team.

    Unhappy Re: Anybody else riding RAGBRAI?

    Brought my Leo Pocket Mandolin on a couple self contained bike tours, last one 20 years ago, for my 50th year , of Ireland and Scotland
    but now I don't fly anywhere.. not even to Iowa.

    I'm on the Oregon coast, rarely leave town.

    BTW, 3 young women were doing a Pacific coast bike tour, they got jerseys made up for their trip,
    said they used https://www.owayo.com/ Did send 'camera ready' graphics,
    they were young, so computer savvy, types.

    One of the great joys of playing mandolin for me these days is how bike-friendly it is. My regular commuter bike has a porteur style front rack which holds my case nicely. I got rid of my car shortly after moving to the "big city" of Madison, WI, so it's nice not to have to worry about taking a bus or cab to a gig when I can pedal on my own power.
    For RAGBRAI though, it's not really a musical endeavor, so maybe I'll take a cheap soprano uke that I won't cry over if it gets wet or dinged up.

    Rode RAGBRAI in 1985 and 1988. Great experience ! Was not playing mandolin at the time. I highly recommend this venture. Iowa is a very interesting state, and you don't realize that until you spend some time off of Interstate 80. The small towns roll out the welcome and it is a great time to mingle with the locals at ground level, enjoying great food and fellowship. You will learn a lot from these fine people, and you will eat your way across Iowa ! Get it done sometime in your life.
