Default Outdoor jam stand for mandolin

Saw a crude one at Merle Fest camp site using a pointed 2X4, pounded into the ground with a wall hanger attached. I've kinda wanted one since. Probably will use it most sitting around the yard and picking.

    Specs:
    'String Swing' mandolin wall hanger
    1.5" X 1.5" oak table leg
10" Timberlock Screw - drill leg end and screw it in, then cut off screw head, sharpen leaving about 7.5" spike
    (4) black HD L-brackets not in picture - mounted around the base for support and using foot to push in spike

Probably will want a soft pad where the mandolin back might touch the oak leg.

I'm open to suggestions before the power tools come out

From your signature line, I see that you have some pretty nice mandolins. Ain't no way I'd trust any of those to be hung on a vertical post that's just shoved in the ground with a spike. At the very least, I would add a knee brace or strut of some sort that can hinge down and provide additional support to counteract the weight of the mandolin when it is on the hanger. The eccentricity of the load will want to pull that post over. The hinged brace could be secured with a second spike or small tent stake.
Keep that skillet good and greasy all the time!

The other option being to just put it in the case when you're not playing it. That's the safest place.

The only reason I can think of for relying upon such a stand, rather than putting the instrument back into its case (much safer!) is that you're switching back and forth between instruments, like the guitar and mandolin, or the fiddle and mandolin. I, personally, would not trust my mandolin to be left out on a stand in a festival area where a lot of other people are milling around -- often with drinks in their hands!

I'm recently retired and the comfortable places to play during the day are out under the trees in the lawn. I tried taking out the case but the bugs crawl into it. I can leave this out by my chair have a place to rest the mandolin while I answer the phone to tell the wife all I'm getting accomplished.

I'm not planning on taking it around festivals or crowds. Mostly in my yard and small gatherings. It's pretty sturdy in my lawn - I'd trust it on turf over any free standing type stand I have.

Might be kind of cool to rig the mandolin holder so that its mounted to your chair (back or side). That way its further off the ground and possibly more stable.

Looks plenty stable to me. We're not talking about the weight of a banjo here.

Who cares about the banjo? Let the banjo player wear out his shoulder. They live for that, they're banjo players, after all.
I actaully like the idea of some sort of hanger on the folding chair, that bears some thought.

Oh, okay, that looks fine. From the first post I was kinda picturing just a sharpened stick - you know, the kind used for vampires - pushed into the ground, but with the anglebrackets & all that should work great. Heck, put a nice finish on it & you could probably sell them at festivals.

If you put the angle on the face (same side as the hanger) and pushed down till angle was on ground it would help off-set the weight of mandolin or you could have fold out legs distributing the weight and the spike just stabilizing it.

That looks great. Well done. Reminds me of the modified upside down U I made and stuck a string swing on that I can slip over the wall in the choir loft at church. Necessity is the mother of invention. Thanks for sharing!
