Default King and Queen of the Mandolin!

Who is the current king and queen of the mandolin? My money is on Chris Thile and Sierra Hull.

king and queen, prince and princess, duke and duchess, baron and baroness, pope and antipope.

A lot of roles to fill here.

I like all the choices I have heard so far. Not sure where Rhonda fits in though.

I am the peasant of the mandolin.

I should learn to play serf music (you know, like the Ventures).

    Allen, I'm merely a serf.

Realistically - when you reach the heights of perfection that our finest players have reached, there is no ''better'' / ''best'' - simply difference - just as it is with our instruments.

Every now & then,i come across musicians i've never even heard of & their musicianship astounds me !. So much for being ''well known''. You don't need to be well known to be awesome - ''awesome'' comes first !,

I watched, last fall, David Grisman, Ronnie McCoury, and Tim Obrien passing breaks back and forth. Who's best? Don't really know nor care. I appreciated the difference in their styles, their tone, and attack. Each was enjoyable, but to compare them side to side was unreal.

If quality of playing is measured, I won't even make the deck.

However, I am all over the instructions card on how to read the deck.
I can only play half as much as I want, because I only play half as much as I would like.

It's just that Thile and Hull seem more technically proficient, or maybe it's just the tunes they play that moves them all over the fingerboard more than the above mentioned players?

For those interested in just enjoying musical expression, instead of in imposing and debating musical heirarchy, please enjoy some Sarah Holbrook and Evan Marshall.

And now, for those who prefer that kind of thing, back to the blinders and debate!

Oh my. The Eva Holbrook clip is stunning. What a wonderful illustration of how the mandolin is about so much more than bluegrass.

Allen I've been tempted to learn some Dick Dale tunes as well as the Ventures. Dick Dale is a master of tremolo and as big a joke as it might be it would still be good practice.

    √ … Wipe out! - definitely!

A guy my age sells locally grown vegetables in the piazza. While shopping, his phone rang with "Rebel Rouser" - a very un-Italian dial tone. We exchanged a note of mutual recognition ...
