Elster and Glocken pocket mandolin unknown date, needs work, but not a lot.

I bid low because I really don't need another mandolin, but I wanted to be in the game, and to know what they would go for. Won them both. Spilled my coffee when I found out.

Last time I said "But honey, I didn't really mean to buy it," I got a really hairy eyeball in reply and some rather cool temperatures for a few days.

I am going to contact Jake Wildwood at Antebellum about the pocket mandolin. I saw some pictures of another pocket he worked on. He's the man.

The Vinaccia does not appear to need anything, so I will clean it and string it up and see.

For absent bidders the auction house will take a maximum bid you are willing to go. Like Ebay. Even so, I did not bid to win, just thinking to be in it and a sort of hey if nobody wants 'em Ill take 'em. I bid what I thought was low, and got them for less.

Dude, score! Especially if you bid low and won them lower. How come I never come across cool stuff like this?

I'd love to see close-up photos of that pocket mandolin.

Do not want to mess with those guys.

Just thinking though, if you really had a picture of two guys, one playing a Fratelli Vinaccia bowlback and the other playing a pocket mandolin, I would be sitting here in a cold shiver with my jaw locked open.

There are a few threads on Vinaccia that I have been perusing. (Not getting any work done today! ) I gather that the brothers Vinaccia mandolins are not as valuable as their dad's, and no where near as valuable as his dad's. Still I think I did well.

I don't know anything about Elster-Glocken pocket mandolins, except its German. Any information anyone has is more information than I have.

I am sure that the Vinaccia is a good quality instrument.

I have a good friend who does what he calls "hail mary bids' on live auctions. His best wins were at one that was scheduled for the day before Thanksgiving. He bid super low and won two instruments with little competition. The auctioneers were not the happiest to let these go for super-low prices, but they also realized that scheduling an auction the day before a major holiday is not too smart.

I don't get lucky catches either. That's because I don't really believe in good luck and rather spend my resources to prepare for the bad luck I actually believe in.

Feel free to take a photoshopped double image of yourself, tint it vintage sepia and give us all the shivers

I agree with sending them to Jake. He worked on two instruments for me, and I have been pleased with both his work and and his fee. And he's pleasant to boot!

I have watched his website for years. I saw he had worked on a pocket mandolin, and did a first rate job on it.

My great-aunt gave me a very similar "pocket" mandolin, labeled "Holdrio-Picolo mandolin, Made in Germany," and sold by "H. V. Co., N.Y." Tailpiece marked "Marcelli."

I will be taking them to Jake later this summer and we'll see. I am hoping for the best, prepared for the worst.
