Default The Queenes Alman - William Byrd (1542 - 1623)

from the Filtwilliam Virginal Book (No. 172)
This simplified arrangement for mandolin quartet is based on the arrangement for alto recorder and keyboard by Paul-Gustav Feller.
It was the convention that a simple, straightforward theme would be followed by a repeat to which many florid scale passages and other decorative figures would be added. In this arrangement the contrast between the first statement of a phrase and its repeat is simply achieved with a change of dynamic.

The arrangement is scored for 2 mandolins, 8ve mandola and guitar. However the scoring can be quite flexible and I have included a mandolin 3 part and an alto mandola (CGDA) part, either of which could replace the 8ve mandola. There is also a mandocello part which is the guitar part but scored with a bass clef.

Score and parts available on my webpage at

    Lovely, Andy.

I recorded the same tune a couple of years ago, using an arrangement by Steve Hendricks:

Similar instrumentation as you, except that I used a nylon-strung and a steel-strung mandolin to get the contrast between the phrases, and mandocello rather than guitar for the bass line.

    Baroq-ulele nylgut-strung mandolin
    1915 Luigi Embergher mandolin
    Mid-Missouri M-111 octave mandolin
    Suzuki MC-815 mandocello
