    Default Crystal Forest A/N {5 string Jazzer}

First I have to thank Terry of Crystal Forest Mandolins on taking this project on as it's out of the norm.

Here are the specs on the build:

    California Redwood top

    Maple back, sides and neck

    Ebony fingerboard and headstock cap

    White binding

    Round hole

Finish will be black top, brown stained back sides and neck.

    Waverly Tuner machines

    Gold hardware

    Scale length: 13 7/8"

    Body depth: 1 3/4"

    Nut width: 1 3/8"

    Photos following.

Terry has started staining. I like his idea for an almost completely black top, but you will be able to see the wood grain in the light.

Gold tailpiece, brown tuner buttons. . .looking good! Are the sides white or just very light at this point?

I like his idea, too. That's exactly what I meant by a dark stain, almost black, but translucent, not opaque. It reminds me of the work of Dr. Dave Cohen: http://www.bfstrings.com/#/inventory/359

I'm curious why you chose to have 5 singles rather than 5 courses?

That is a good question. I wanted to get more of a jazz guitar tone.

Congrats Joey! Looks fantastic, I've been following the progress pics with interest (love seeing things built) and I have found myself liking black top mandolins more and more.
