I recommend keeping the song in the original Dm, as your first example did, but shifting it up an octave and starting on the D string on the tenor.

I've been toying with the idea of buying a tenor guitar. How does the right hand technique differ from the mandolin? Can it be played with a pick?
Yes get one (or two) just treat them like a big mandolin
If you play the mandolin, you will be able to play the tenor, over time you will develop different fingering & technique but it will all come naturally.
