    Default octave mandolin string sets???

    another newbie question.
The Girouard has arrived-I just received it and had to zoom out to go to work-brought it to work of course. Will get hands on when time permits.

Did a quick search on string sets-daddario J80 recommended, any other sets recommended?

    thank you

Depends on your scale length. The J80 set is pretty good for 22 or 23 inches, but will be too low tension for a shorter scale. On my 20 inch I like J72 light mandola strings- yes, they're long enough. A set with very very similar guages is the John Pearse Custom OM set, that is the standard set on Weber short scales. Many players use a string tension calculator to put together their ideal set from single strings, since there are so few sets available. Maybe if you emailed Max he could tell you what his recommended set is?

I second the mandola strings. I've had 3 octave mandolins at about 20-21 inch scale length and those mandola strings make them roar.

currenty has John Pearse Gauges 45-32-21-12. I like these a lot. They sound and work great on this octave so i'll definitely grab a set of these again. I'll try out the daddario also, and Max also mentioned he uses Curt Mangan's 46-32-21-12 (ordered individually Mangans website).
I'm a huge fan of John Pearse strings and use them on my mandolin and guitars, so this was neat to hear that was what was on it.
