Default Thile's Loar: Not Enough Low End?

A sweet new post from NYC stalwart Jacob Silver. I got to know his playing when he was recording and performing with Aoife O'Donovan.

Given that this IS a mandolin site, I'll include Thile's performance as well. (I also believe some folks have played this piece on violin )

I generally don't 'approve' of misleading Thread Titles - so feeling slightly guilty! But I would not have posted if I hadn't thought Jacob Silver's performance was exceptionally skilled and musical.

LMAO, I was prepared to advise Chris to trade one of his Loars for my Silverangel, just for a few weeks, to see what life with some mando bottom end is like

Very cool bass vid...don't get to see e-bass go solo Bach very often! That said, Thile's performance is so freaking good...to those reading with plans to watch later, watch the bass video first :mandosmiley

Thile is incredible. I would have been bothered by the twisted strap around the scroll if it was me. Of course, I don't know that tune, so…

That's what I love about Bach: you can play it on any instrument, from a tin whistle to a tuba and it all sounds great!

A quote attributed to Douglas Adams:

Beethoven tells you what it's like to be Beethoven
and Mozart tells you what it's like to be human.
Bach tells you what it's like to be the Universe.

Thanks for posting that video. And I love the thread title. I too am generally opposed to 'misleading' thread titles, except when they are used to prey upon certain people's compulsive need to criticize Thile for everything.

You know, I am a bit confused about that, and maybe someone here in the Classical forum can help me. Thile is playing at a tempo about a 30% faster than Silver. So either Thile is repeating a portion of the Presto, or Silver is leaving out a portion. Is this a standard variation in performance, I wonder?

My question, just above, answered by Jacob:

There are two sections to this piece - each of which repeat. I only did the repeat on the first section. For me not doing the repeats felt too short and doing both the repeats felt too long, especially because my tempo is slower than where a violinist would probably do it (it's on a bass alright?!). Also there's a video of Hilary Hahn doing it on youtube which I referenced a lot while learning this piece and she also did it that way, which I quite liked.
