My Weber Absaroka, f holes, could have been the last Mando I bought, but I didn't discover the mojo until I had it refretted, speed neck and neck profile reshaped. Wasn't overnight, so I bought a few others along the way, all very nice.

But the Weber is what I take to play out 90% of the time. Sometimes the mojo needs a little help. Ymmv

To think that a single purchase of a mandolin in the low-mid price range, unsampled, will possess full mojo, and be your final mando...this might be unreasonable. I have a full mojo mandolin, and I'm poor, and I'm getting a new mandolin. MAS is a sickness . I have several awesome fiddles and am really thinking of looking for another. What reasoning leads you to think one is the right number to own while desiring mojo?

In 2000 I bought am A style Dearstone mandolin from Ray. I can't say it was or will ever be the last mandolin I will ever buy, I've bought several since then. But I can say, with no doubt at all, it will be the last mandolin I ever sell.my MAS flares up and I buy a mandolin but since the 'stone none have been my main axe they are just play things, the Dearstone is my love. I've said many times my wife or children may sell it after I'm gone but I won't.

Mojo is in the heart of the beholder, right? This has all been a HUGE help!

I made an offer on the Redline. From what I've gleaned, they're consistently high quality for my price range. In Tennessee, they'd have to be.

If that doesn't work out, it'll be the Gallatin, no tears. And if THAT doesn't work out, I'll take a break, save a little more money, and try again at the end of the year. (Those new Northfield Model M's, for instance, which one of you pointed me to, are temptation with a mint on the pillow!)

Got my mojo working - thanks to you all! I'll let you know what happens. I'm expecting a call from the Redline seller soon.

There's a Flatiron A model (f-holes) in the classifieds. It's south of a grand. NFI.

    Congrats!
    I dig the red.

Do yourself a favor, find a teacher or mando class at a music school. Youll progress much faster than on your own, and, have more fun too.

    Nice!
Bradford and Franzke is a great shop to deal with!
And a great price for an American handmade mandolin. Steve Smith is a great craftsman.
That's a great looking mandolin! Enjoy it!

    Well done Charlie, well done.

You don't have to think about your next mandolin for maybe a year or so!

A cavaquinho is a Portuguese/Brazilian 4 string instrument somewhat like a ukulele. Usually has a bit shorter scale length than a mandolin by about 1/3 to 1/2 inch. It can be strung and tuned like a 4 string mandolin. Electric cavaquinhos make pretty decent electric mandolins.

Cool. I'll Google some images. Sometimes I think it'd be fun to get a Mexican vihuela, but I have enough problems!

I had a friend with one of those scooped-out armadillo thingies - a caranga? - that made some interesting sounds. Probaby not the world's most versatile axe. And I read that Danny Ferrington is making instruments out of gourds now. The vegan alternative. Save the armadillos!

    PS -

Just Googled cavquinhos and found this:

Thanks for the vuvu link. My next instrument! (And they're huge with with all those finger-free lepers, I'm sure . . . .)
