If an extra £29 is technically within budget, the Eastman MD304 is the best option I saw: http://www.eaglemusicshop.com/prod/m...d-mandolin.htm

But you'll get more bling with an F-style

    I have a Kentucky KM-171.
It is the black topped sister to the KM-172
I have been very happy with it.

My first choice would have been the honey amber finish, but the black topped 171 was on sale as "shop worn".
The GHS Silk & Bronze strings, in my opinion, work well on this mandolin

Have you decided on an arch top instrument? Might be some excellent flat tops within your budget.

I saw an Eastman 305 last year in a music store in Amsterdam {next to the University) for less than 425 Euros. I think the 305 and 304 are priced similarly.
This could be a good excuse to make a quick hop to Amsterdam.
I'm headed to Heidelberg in October. Last time there I visited a few music stores and found nothing of interest.
