5-piece mandolin jam to get you up and moving this morning

I know this is an old video, and has probably been posted here before. Just thought I'd share some good old mandolin inspirational grooviness this morning to help you get through your Wednesday.

Jake's breaks were my least favorite. While I will admit they were uniquely different than the others, I think he strayed a bit far from the melody and went into showboat mode. Some of what he played didn't seem to "fit" with the chord progression to my tastes. But that's one of the things I like about this video: seeing the different approaches from seriously talented mandolinists played back-to-back. Each listener will have a favorite and take something different away from it all.

Are Paul Hoffman's toenails painted?

Tobin - you are right, he does seem to go into 'showboat' mode when he gets up over the 12th fret or so, but overall I like guys who 'push the envelope' a bit . . . besides, you can see in the 2nd solo that he is almost laughing as he does it - kind of like he is just having fun and not being overly-serious about an impromptu jam . . . which i also like.

An aside question:

How many of us could have sat in on that jam and not been embarrassed?

I for one would have been TOTALLY out of place!

I would not have been embarrassed, self conscious? Good grief yes but, they eat, sleep, and go to the bathroom just like anyone else. I've played with a few "idols" and it takes a few minutes to feel...well, anything. Big guns are usually more accommodating than you think. They get what's going on.

I'd have given a lot so sit & pick with those guys in real life,as it is,i pick along to the clip on my PC. Timothy is spot on as usual - pickers of their ability have been 'where we are' at one time, & they appreciate us 'normal' folk at least trying our best - in fact they're far less 'snooty' about things than some amateurs who simply show off to others & look down on lesser musicians from their heights of ignorance !. I've been around far too many of those over 50 years +.

Would i have fell embarrased ? - No way - inspired for the next 10 years + YES !!!
