I've purchased several bone saddles from Bob and they were definitely worth it.

I've used his saddles and like them. The pins make no difference.

Yeah, I would add that this is also a bouzouki and octave mandolin forum. Some of those have guitar style fixed bridges and use bridge pins, so there might be some interest here.

I would hazard a guess that with the exception of Ricky Skaggs and Ronnie Reno, most of us "mandolin players" started out on guitar.....

Its largely cosmetic, You OK with that? I have replaced white plastic pins with some made from wood

Well, like having a coffee or beer with friends, i like sharing info with similarly musically minded folks. Even...by gawd...about guitar.
I cant imagine someone stopping a conversation to say, you cant talk about THAT.

I too have bobs pins and saddles. Superb work.
And, as for pins, some guitars change in sound, i have read, some dont.

Me too; the acoustic properties of abalone far exceed those of of, say, mother-of-toilet-seat.

cosmetics were a big factor, but in this case a couple of the stock pins were evidently not seating properly (both showed a sharp "seating" ring on the pins) so I figured if I was going to need to sand down these two pins why not just upgrade. I had to do just a hair of sanding with 1000 grit paper) to get the high E seated properly on the set from Bob. they really look nice and the two strings (G and B) seems to coming thru better. again I could have done the same with the stock pins, but Bob was pleasure to do business with and helped me pick out a set that really do look nice- so for a little money I'm very pleased with the results.
