Eldon Stutzman, Rochester instrument dealer for whom I worked part-time in the 1970's, once said he'd pay $500 to someone who brought in a Gibson F-model mandolin, in pieces, in a brown paper bag. Don't know if he wanted the parts, or if he looked forward to reconstruction and renovating the instrument. Also, don't know if anyone ever took him up on it.
This ain't even close, however.

I see a finished top, finished rim, kerfing, and tailblock. That's the start of a fine mandolin. The half neck block can be removed from the rim and replaced. Add a back, neck, and you have a fine mandolin with some very old top wood. If you just take the top wood for a new mandolin, that may be red spruce, and think what a red spruce board costs you today. Now one that is already 100 years old. If that was an f-hole, I'd snatch it up just for the top.
It's certainly not a lamp shade.

Somebody, somewhere has an A4 with a busted top.....this would give 'em what they need to make and restore a cool vintage Gibson mandolin. And if they were careful, they could claim original finish, once restored!
Flashback: When I was 22 I totaled my pride and joy a 1966 Ford Mustang on an icy overpass bridge. Being a college student, I only carried liability insurance on it and couldn't afford to have it restored. I sold it to a body shop guy for $500. About a month later, I saw him driving it around and it looked great with the dents fixed and a new paint job. He told me all the guys who worked there drove cars that were 'totaled' and fixed them up!

I agree with fscotte (#17). Any Gibson top and sides would be worth building a back and neck for, and this is not just any old Gibson. I was going to bid on it but it went a little too high for me as I would have to pay shipping to UK and probably import duty too. Well worth the work involved - I would have loved doing it. Must admit I'm a bit shocked by some of the disparaging comments people have made.
If anyone has such items kicking around a dusty corner of their workshop, or doing service as plant holders or table lamps, please let me know . . .

Right. Take the sides, and blocks out of the equation. What you have left is a top plate of red spruce, over 100 years old. Yes, it has some cracks, but so does every mandolin - right down the center, we glue them up and call it normal. So this is a very recoverable top plate. So compare that to spruce today. A high grade red spruce can run you $60 or more. $177 is a little high, but I was thinking $100 would have been fine for this.
