Suspect this tour will sell itself out. Fact that the CD is just getting released is likely getting in the way of the news about the tour but that will be coming. A friend whose recording I played on got these two tickets as part of my reward for playing with her (I promise, I made interesting mistakes on her album). Wasn't even aware they were coming but happy to find out via a pair of seats for the performance. Those of you within driving distance, Kansas City's new Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts where they will play is without question one of the finest performance venues in the U.S. If you can get here for it, the performance is certain to be memorable, and the venue is like one you've never witnessed.
Scott hit the nail on the head here, Boston is sold out. Bummer. There's really no need for them to advertise this, as they're appearing at each place as part of a series of guest appearances that each symphony orchestra has as a season series. They were sold out in many places before their appearance was even announced. Darn. Well, they deserve it, so good for them.

What? No New York appearances? Maybe they will add dates later? I guess each of them are seriously busy.

The tour begins at Boston Symphony Hall (presented as part of Celebrity Series of Boston) on April 21, followed by the University Musical Society in Ann Arbor on April 22. The Chicago Symphony Orchestra hosts the trio on April 24, followed by the Nashville Symphony Orchestra in its home of the Schermerhorn Symphony Center on April 26. In California, Edgar, Yo-Yo, and Chris first land at Bing Auditorium as part of Stanford Live on April 29, followed by the Granada Theatre at University of California Santa Barbara on May 2. They end at the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s home of Walt Disney Concert Hall on May 3.

Maybe because Rastrapovich is deceased? Actually saw him a couple of times. Wonderful. Yo Yo Ma is the best musician I have ever seen.

Psyched to see them at Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles on May 3!

Just noticed they all wear their wedding rings on their "picking" hands.

    To say nothing of Piatigorsky.

When I was a young kid growing up, classical music seemed to be a universe of difficult names. Vladimir Horowitz, Arturuo Toscanini, Jascha Heifetz, Gregor Piatoigorsky, Dmitri Shostakovich, Mstislave Rostropovich, Sergei Prokofiev. If you could pronounce the name of the artist or the composer, it must not be all that good.

Eh, go for the vibe, the community, the experience. The sound at any large live venue will never be as clear as listening in your room on a nice audio system, anyway. They're not playing any small venues, so it's not like it's a house concert. Tanglewoods, for example, is a great outdoor experience. And yeah, outdoor sound is always compromised, but the scene and sense of community is great.

I've seen a lot of performances at the Greek Theater, and I think it would work. But Zellerbach would be better.

With my tickets in hand, I'll head to The Granada Theater on State Street in downtown Santa Barbara, not on the UCSB campus, which is 10 miles west.

More food for thought for those of you just sure this musician business is a cushy job. Probably the preeminent classical musical blogger on the planet (who we follow because he reports on all kinds of music) reported this morning that The Economist published:

Of 8.7 million different tacks that sold at least one copy (last year), 96 percent sold fewer than 100 copies and 40 percent – 3.5 million tracks – were purchased just once.

(This) does not include the many songs on offer that have never sold a single copy,

Spotify said in 2013 that of its 20-million song catalogue at the time, 80 percent had been played – in other words the remaining four million songs had generated no interest at all.

Sounds about right. When we had the Revelers last year, I had asked them about downloads. They said it was essentially nothing, and that the past month only three tracks were bought off iTunes. They turned out to be the tracks I bought for promo purposes. Same thing with Driftwood this year, and with 9 Horses. Pretty much everyone has the same story.

    DMIS.

Ma's cackle of laughter at the end of the YT video was about 1 second ahead of my own and says it all.

    Semi Tough.

Looking forward to the CD and to the live show(s).

A musician can no longer make a living from sales of recorded music—those days are over. Income from streaming is paltry for anyone other than top tier pop stars. For everyone else it's all about touring and merchandise (of which CDs are a minor component). The occasional placement of recordings in TV and film can be a nice bump, but lesser known artists usually can't get enough of those to survive.

From a Nonesuch email blast some of you may wish to take advantage of:

Yo-Yo Ma, Chris Thile, and Edgar Meyer have shared their recording of Bach's Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme, BWV 645, from their forthcoming album, Bach Trios, due April 7. Hear it here and get the track now when you pre-order the album, along with a previously released track, the first movement of Bach's Trio Sonata No. 6 in G Major, BWV 530.
