Thread: Replacing Gibson Tailpiece

    Question Replacing Gibson Tailpiece

    Hi All,

I have a 1960 Gibson A40 and the original tailpiece cracked right at the bend. I ordered a Golden Gate M-131 to replace it. While the holes are all spaced to correctly fit the holes on my mandolin, the bend is too low and does not fit over the top of my mandolin (i.e. the distance between the holes and the bend in the tailpiece is shorter than the distance between the holes and the top of my mandolin).

Can anyone recommend a tailpiece that should fit my A40?

    Thanks!

Check the tailpieces sold by Greg Boyd

Your existing cover might actually fit this. If you call on the phone and tell them the dimension they would probably measure one for you. The problem with Gibson standard tailpieces is that there really isn't much of a standard. Sometimes holes have to be filled and re-drilled. With that said I'd surprised if the Prucha tailpieces at Boyd are that much different than the original.

The Prucha tail pieces are from steel and quite fine. They should be bendable to some degree. But for an old Gibson, I'd approach the next jeweler and have the original soldered, no matter what.

It's a 1960 Gibson A40. I realize that's old but the tailpiece being original isn't going to change the value on that mandolin. It's not an issue with the tailpiece bending, it's an issue with where the bend is on the replacement. There's a chance that the Pruchas will drop right on and he can save the broken one for the collector that wants it when he sells it.

Thanks for the responses everyone! I think I am going to go ahead and order a Prucha and see how that works for me. I had not even thought about going to a jeweler but I'll keep that idea in my back pocket.
