Default Free tunes for winter 2016: Winter's Tale 3

    Dear Mandolin Friends,

Yet another year has rolled around since I posted my Winter's Tale 2 tune book on this Forum. Here is Winter's Tale Book 3. I hope you enjoy playing through it. If you see any errors, please let me know and I will correct them. I wish you all a wonderful closing of the year.

    Best regards,

Many thanks for those -- as in the previous two years, this is again a wonderful collection of tunes, some well-known and some obscure, but all a great joy to play.

For those who missed them the first time around, here are the links to Evelyn's first two volumes of her "Winter's Tale":

    Winter's Tale 1 (2014)
    Winter's Tale 2 (2015)

I have been playing around with a couple of these arrangements over the weekend and here are my recordings:

    1) Tusen Sjöars Vals (Thousand Lakes Waltz)

    René Gérôme "Gelas" mandolin
    1915 Luigi Embergher mandolin
    1921 Gibson Ajr mandolin
    Vintage Viaten tenor guitar

    2) Canzone d'l Zampognari

    1890s Umberto Ceccherini mandolin
    Mid-Missouri M-0W mandolin
    Mid-Missouri M-111 octave mandolin
    Vintage Viaten tenor guitar

    Thanks, Evelyn!

We're a bit North right now of our beloved TX, so thinking about Winter is a good ways off. (This Autumn has been stunning.)

Nevertheless.....I am grateful that you are thinking of us, however reluctant, Yanquis. I look forward to the new music and your thoughtful arrangements.

Martin, thank you so much for posting your lovely recordings and images of these tunes. I was reminded while driving home today that it is time to play winter tunes. The grackles are swarming in Central and South Texas, which is a sure sign that it is November, even if a warm one. I hope someone will give my slip jig a go. It's called "Dance of the Grackles." They are jockeying for position on the power lines.

Wow! What a treasure. Thanks. And just in time for us in WNY, snow predicted for Sunday. Also thanks for the links to the previous ones. Already love the "A la Naninta Nana." Tried the "Dance of the Grackles." That'll take a minute.
    Thanks again!

Here is another one of the tunes from Evelyn's new book:

"An Páistín Fionn (The Fair-Haired Child)" -- Irish slow air

Played on three mandolins and tenor guitar.

    1921 Gibson Ajr mandolin (x3)
    Vintage Viaten tenor guitar

Yet another one of Evelyn's arrangements recorded today:

"Wild Drives The Bitter North Blast (Fingall's Lamentation)" - Scottish slow air

Took a little bit to get my head around, but once I decided to play the melody line on tenor guitar it all fell into place.

Thank you Martin for both lovely pieces. Fingall's Cave is one of the great natural wonders of the world and was a highlight of my pilgrimage to Iona.

    Dear Mandolin Friends,

Once again another year has gone by since I posted my last Winter's Tale tune book on this Forum. Here is Winter's Tale Book 4, with 22 tunes for mandolin trio plus guitar chords.

Many of the tunes in this folio are about rain, wind, and storms. Storms were on my mind because of the hurricanes experienced by the US and the Caribbean this year. My house received 22 inches from Hurricane Harvey, but no damage. Other people and places are still recovering. There are also some rare and even obscure tunes that I hope you will enjoy. The tunes are:

Aria from The Star of Bethlehem (Oswald, Scotland)
    The Ball (Traditional, England)
A Blast of Wind (Traditional, Ireland)
Bridget Cruise - Fourth Air (O’Carolan, Ireland)
    Catching the Wind (Tiffany-Castiglioni, USA)
Come in from the Rain (Traditional, Ireland)
    Gigue des Sucres (Traditional, Quebec)
Gloria a Dios en las alturas (Traditional, Spain)
    Hamadil (Traditional, Sephardic)
In the Fields in Frost and Snow (Traditional, England)
Jésus est né rempli de charmes (Traditional, France)
    The North Wind (Traditional, Ireland)
    Possum Patrol (Tiffany-Castiglioni, USA)
The Rainy Day Jig (Traditional, Ireland)
The Rainy Day Reel (Traditional, Ireland)
Rondeau from the Abdelazer Suite (Purcell, England)
    The Snow Storm (Traditional, Ireland)
    Speed the Plow (Traditional, England)
    Storm (Tiffany-Castiglioni, USA)
    Tamlin (Arthur, Ireland)
Up in the Morning Early (Traditional, Scotland)
The Wind Blew High (Gitlitz, Canada)

The links to my first 3 Winter's Tale Collections are earlier in this thread.

    Best regards,
    Evelyn

Yes, Evelyn, you are a complete star! You are very generous to share these with us each year -- my wife and I are enjoying working out of these Winter's Tale collections as well as your larger collections which we've purchased (everybody should buy these!)

    Thank you!

Thank you for your kind comments, Jeremy and DH. Wonder of wonders, it is snowing here in College Station. This is only the 3rd or 4th time I remember it sticking in 35 years. If the possum patrol (see tune on p. 15) leaves tracks tonight, I will try to get a photo.

    Best regards,
    Evelyn

Thank you for doing these. Perfect to work on while curled up inside during winter. Okay, I try not to, but when there is a layer of ice below the snow here in Minnesota, it's tough to get too excited about having fun outside.

I was asked to transpose some of the tunes in Winter's Tale 4 to alto clef and bass clef for a trio in Pennsylvania that plays treble, viola, and bassoon. Here are the pdfs in case anyone else would like them. The tunes are:

    The Ball (Traditional, England)
Bridget Cruise - Fourth Air (O’Carolan, Ireland)
    Catching the Wind (Tiffany-Castiglioni, USA)
Come in from the Rain (Traditional, Ireland)
    Gigue des Sucres (Traditional, Quebec)
    Hamadil (Traditional, Sephardic)
    The North Wind (Traditional, Ireland)
    Possum Patrol (Tiffany-Castiglioni, USA)
The Rainy Day Jig (Traditional, Ireland)
    Storm (Tiffany-Castiglioni, USA)
    Tamlin (Arthur, Ireland)
Up in the Morning Early (Traditional, Scotland)
The Wind Blew High (Gitlitz, Canada)

    Season's Greetings,

    Jeremy,

In reference to your bass player, here is a tune from Winter's Tale 1, "Pretty Little Cat." The bass (harmony) line is really fun on my Kala UBass, which is a baritone ukulele with thick polyurethane strings tuned like an upright bass. I transposed it to alto and bass clefs in case you would like to try the experiment.

Thanks Evelyn, we'll give that a try. We were running around your Eighth of January last night, a fiddle, baritone Uke tuned GDAE and me on my OM -we rotated through the parts to add to the fun -although the OM seemed to be the only one that could carry off the descant with authority.

Here are transpositions of Winter's Tale 2 from 2015 for viola clef and bass clef, as requested by friends in Wisconsin. There are several New Year's tunes in this volume. I am posting them in case they may be of interest to others.
