"That was the whole reason for the joking behind the "4-1/2" designation." Sorry I was being dim, I was wondering what it meant... I get it now.

"Yeah, the first A5 was the Griffith A5, no? (15 frets, right?)" Yes BUT that didn't go into production, what about the A5 with two points and the F headstock? I think Gibson even called the lump scroll/mouse ear thingy an A5 at one point? I am really not trying to start an argument here... just having a little fun with Gibson's naming practices over the years.

I just bought this mandolin from Tamco. It's fantastic. As was the customer service from Tamco.

Sean - You'll enjoy that mandolin for decades ( i hope). I bought a used Ellis "A" style from TAMCO 3 years back,& it's pretty awesome. Don't be surprised re.TAMCO's excellent service - it comes as 'standard' ,

I prefer this rosette with the ivoroid light coloured centre. When Gibson did that, it just put a stamp on these old A4s, F2s, F4s and to me it is better than any other rosette. If you're going to copy the Gibson shape, as many have done, then the rosette is a major part of it.

I also LOVE the Ellis headstock inlay on Trevor's one. I thin k the fern headstock on F5s is overdone. This is class.
